PASSPORT FUNDING ALERT

JULY 1, 2009

Another week-no budget-more advocacy! No agreement being reached on the budget provides us with another advocacy opportunity! You have been awesome-diligent and steadfast- and we need to unite again to make contacts to our legislators. Please call the Governor, Senator Harris, Representative Budish (The Big Three) and your own state senator and representative. Our messages are simple-suggestions listed below or please use your own. There will be five calls minimum. If you have more time, please call others on our list.

AARP once again has provided the toll free number 1-800-926-5875 especially easy for consumers and their families. Senator Harris and Representative Budish’s numbers are listed below. Even if the legislators’ phone lines ring busy, please keep trying to complete your calls. Please encourage consumers, families, caregivers, etc to make these contacts as well. The consumer’s calls are most effective. Your continuing efforts have made a difference already impacting the budget delay. We have to be persistent now with our message and make it difficult for them to say ‘no’ to our consumers-(the ‘wear them down’ strategy. These calls are vitally important to the outcome of this budget and every call counts! Show our legislators that we are force to be reckoned with!

OUR MESSAGE

Don’t cut PASSPORT and home and community based care services.
Give seniors choice: they prefer home care and it saves the state money.
Nursing Homes cost 4 times more than the cost of PASSPORT
Ohio cannot afford to cut PASSPORT and home care. That cut would result in INCREASED nursing home costs of $102 million
Let Older Ohioans Choose their Long-Term Care: Don’t Force People Into Nursing Homes.

If you need any assistance with your message, accessing legislators, or have any questions, please contact a member of the Advocacy committee.

WE CAN DO THIS! Keep the spirit strong!

Thank you for your commitment and dedication to seniors!

Protect Services to Ohio Seniors

                          We Need Your Help Now!

Read this memo and take action by calling 1-800-926-5875.

Fellow Ohioan --

The Ohio legislature is in the final week before the deadline for the 2010-11 state budget. The Governor has proposed an outline of a budget which is designed to bring the legislative conferees to the table to resolve a large number of issues. Included in the issues under debate is funding for PASSPORT -- Ohio's home based care service, the expansion of assisted living, the availability of home delivered meals, home visits by nurses and transportation services for the elderly. It is expected that over 10,000 adults wishing in home services will placed on waiting lists and 18,000 will not have access to the other services just mentioned.

Some members of the legislature want to pass a short term budget lasting only a month or two rather than do what needs to be done now. An interim budget will only complicate things. It will mean using our limited additional revenue inappropriately as well as diminishing the time available to implement any cuts in state programs that will be made thus making them more severe.

Please call: 1-800-926-5875. You will be connected to your legislators.
Ask them to:

  • Not cut PASSPORT and the other important services to our elderly;
  • Restore the revenue needed to bring the additional important services to our members; and
  • Encourage them to finish their job now and complete the budget by July 1.

                                  Call Now - 1-800-926-5875
This issue is too important to wait until another day.

Thank you for your support.
